Upon completion of your tattoo, leave bandage on for an hour or two then gently pull bandage off. If the bandage sticks, apply water to moisten the bandage and remove gently. Apply dial antibacterial soap and warm water to the tattoo and rub in a gentle circular motion. Rinse off and pat dry with a clean paper towel (Bounty is the best). Let the tattoo air out for a minute then apply a thin, light coat of A&D ointment or Barri-Care (moist, not shiny and wet). Check the tattoo periodically to make sure it is lightly moist. Make sure you wash the tattoo at least twice a day only applying ointment once it’s been washed and patted dried. Never apply new ointment over existing ointment.

The key to healing the tattoo well is to keep it moist, but make sure you are not over doing it with ointment (moist, not shiny and wet). For the first three nights you may want to bandage the tattoo with a non-stick bandage and a little more ointment than you do during the day, due to the fact the bandage will absorb some of the ointment. If your tattoo is on your arm or leg, you can use plastic wrap instead of a bandage. You should follow this routine of using the ointment for the first three to five days.

The tattoo may flake and peel, allow it to do so all on its own, do no pick at it. Once the tattoo begins to peel you no longer need to apply the ointment. You should now switch to a moisturizing lotion, Lubriderm Seriously Sensitive or H20cean Skin Moisturizing Cream are our favorites. You may apply the lotion as much as desired, keeping your tattoo moist forever.
